Speleo Apps
Smart phones are wonderful devices integrating a lot of functions.
Their real advantage is that they are expandable with the installation of programs from
third parties. These devices are not restricted to the set of factory
applications, but you can put on them the apps most useful to you.
There is a central place for Android apps: Google play (once was named the "Market").
Here a caver can find several generic apps that he/she can make use of: clinometer,
compass, gps tracker, maps, etc. I found an app to take geological notes in the field,
and one to display 3D views of the caves, and their overlay on a topographic map.
When I started I could not find apps to do the survey in the cave, or to connect to a cave
geographical database (with surveys, articles, reports, photoes).
Therefore I developed three Android apps specifically designed for cave surveying:
- TopoDroid, to survey in the cave with the DistoX, SAP5, or BRIC4
- Cave3D to display 3D views of the surveys,
including you are doing, on the spot.
- Proj4: a "very basic" coordinate conversion app.
Based on the Proj4 library.
